Khuri Sand Dunes are located about 50 km away on the southern outskirts of Jaisalmer. Gadisar Lake is a historic, man-made rainwater reservoir constructed in the 14th century by Maharwal Gadi Singh to serve as the single water source for the arid kingdom. The scenic lake is entirely surrounded by beautifully carved sandstone shrines, pillared ghats, and the grand Tilon-ki-Pol gateway that spans over the entrance. Today, it is a highly popular, relaxing spot where travellers can feed schools of catfish, rent pedal boats, or simply enjoy a quiet stroll as migratory birds arrive during the winter months
Rising directly out of the Thar Desert sand like a massive golden sandcastle, the majestic Jaisalmer Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's very few remaining "living forts". Nearly a quarter of the old city's population still resides permanently inside its massive stone walls, which are packed with ancient houses, vibrant local markets, and royal palaces. As the sun tracks across the sky, the unique yellow sandstone walls shift colors from tawny lion-gold to a bright honey-amber, earning it the famous local moniker of Sonar Quila.
Long before Jaisalmer was founded, the ancient village of Lodurva served as the thriving, fortified capital of the Bhatti Rajput dynasty. Though the city was largely destroyed by invaders in the 12th century, its magnificent, ornate Jain temples have been beautifully restored. Constructed entirely out of bright yellow sandstone, the main temple is celebrated for its incredibly intricate carvings, complex stone arches, and a legendary stone-carved tree (Kalpavriksha). The quiet, spiritual atmosphere here offers a welcome break from the busy tourist crowds of the dunes.
Bada Bagh, which translates to "Big Garden," is a historic royal cenotaph complex located just off the road leading back toward the city. Built over consecutive centuries, this tranquil site houses a series of beautifully carved sandstone chhatris (dome-shaped pavilions) dedicated to the past Maharajas and royal rulers of Jaisalmer. The structures are built on a small hill overlooking a green oasis, creating a striking contrast against the dry environment. It is a peaceful architectural marvel that comes alive with a warm glow during late afternoons
Perched dramatically on a rocky hill overlooking an empty valley, Khaba Fort is another fascinating historical ruin dating back to the 13th century. Similar to Kuldhara, this outpost was once a bustling settlement that belonged to the Paliwal Brahmins before it was suddenly deserted. The upper ramparts offer an incredible, unobstructed view of the sweeping desert landscape and the crumbling remains of eighty abandoned homes below. It is highly regarded by photographers as one of the absolute best spots in the region to watch the desert sunrise.
